Sailing Lessons - What You Will Learn
The Keelboat Class (about 10 hours of instruction) will teach you the
fundamentals of sailing and give you the skills to
be comfortable on sailboats from 22 to 27 feet.
The Coastal Cruising Class (about 10 hours of instruction) will build on basic
sailing skills and will introduce students to
navigation and the more complicated systems
found on larger sailboats. Students will acquire
the skills to sail boats 30 to 33 feet LOA with
confidence. The Combination Keelboat/Coastal Course Curriculum
includes: Terminology, Knots, Equipment, Points
of sail, Right-of-way Rules, Weather & wind,
Reefing, Man-Overboard, Anchoring, Docking and
casting off under sail and power, Single-handed
sailing, Operation and basic service of auxiliary
engines, Using electronic equipment, Safety &
seamanship, Basics of navigation and Boat
systems.
These skills will be developed and applied to
situations you will encounter in San Diego Bay,
both while taking the sailing lessons and later
when you are the skipper on your own San Diego
Sailing Charter. We can arrange liveaboard and learn to sail vacations.
The Combination Basic Keelboat /Coastal
Cruising Course is $580
(includes club
membership, materials and instruction). The Basic
Keelboat Class and the Coastal Cruising Class
can be taken as stand-alone courses for
$360
each (includes materials and instruction).
Basic Keelboat Sailing Lessons
The Basic Keelboat graduate will have
successfully demonstrated the ability to
responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing
keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate
wind and sea conditions. Courses are taught
aboard sailing sloops (22-27 feet) with inboard or
outboard auxiliary engines. Skills to be mastered
include: Basic Sailing Terminology, Knots, Points
of sail, Right-of-way Rules, Weather & Wind,
Reefing, Man-Overboard, Docking & Maneuvering
under sail and power, Single-handed sailing,
Operation of auxiliary engines and Boat Safety &
Seamanship.
Once you have completed this course, you will be
able to sail an auxiliary-powered sailboat and take
friends or family daysailing on San Diego Bay.
Basic Coastal Cruising Sailing Lessons
With this level of sailing instruction you learn to
responsibly skipper and crew an auxiliary-powered
cruising sailboat during daylight hours within sight of land in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Courses are taught aboard sailing sloops of
moderate size (30-33 feet) with inboard auxiliary
engines. Now you can build upon the skills gained
in smaller keelboats as you become familiar with
cruising boats which have more comfortable
accommodations and more complex systems. You
will advance your skill level in sail trim, reefing,
crew coordination, boat systems, chart reading,
tides and currents, anchoring, rules-of-the-road
and more.
Once you have completed this course, you will be
able to sail an auxiliary-powered cruising sailboat
and take friends or family daysailing to explore the
coastline and its harbors.
Bareboat Cruising Sailing Lessons
To responsibly skipper, crew or bareboat charter
an inboard auxiliary powered cruising sailboat
within sight of land to a port or an anchorage
during daylight hours in moderate to strong wind
and sea conditions. This is the major goal of many
sailors-to be able to bareboat charter or cruise with
confidence.
This certification opens the door to the
beautiful world of tropical destinations and
advances you to larger boats capable of longer
passages. Courses are taught aboard 38-45 foot
cruising sailboats with wheel steering and inboard
diesel auxiliary power. You will polish your sailing
skills, work with boat systems, tow a dinghy and
learn more advanced navigation and anchoring
techniques in preparation for chartering and long
distance sailing.
Successfully complete this level and you'll be ready
to set sail on weekend cruises or bareboat charter
at exotic tropical destinations.
Coastal Navigation Lessons

You will learn how to properly use traditional navigation techniques and electronic navigation for near coastal passage making. This navigation course is "ground school" for the advanced certifications where you will be venturing offshore, away from sight of land and out of protected waters. You will learn about piloting, deduced (ded or "dead") reckoning, set and drift, taking bearings and ranges. You'll learn about radar, Loran, GPS and other electronic aids to navigation and how to integrate them with traditional piloting methods.
Your Coastal Navigation Certification will provide you with the skills and confidence to navigate your way to any destination.
